  • Sound and Rhyme Scheme (#4 on 22) 
    • Effect?

3. Skim and Scan "Frederick Douglass" by Robert Hayden.
  • Diffuse the text

4. Predict about the Title, then read aloud "Frederick Douglass" by Robert Hayden

Work Period:

5. Small groups, TPCASTT the poem.

6. Large group, discuss TPCASTT

  • What is "it" and "thing" in the poem? (#5 on 22)
    • ambiguity
  • Sound and Free verse (#6 on 22)

7. Review Metaphor and Simile (Write down definitions from page 25)

8. After each poem has been discussed, jigsaw:

  • Group A:   extended metaphor in "O Captain! My Captain!"
  • Group B: Similes in "Frederick Douglass"

Closing:

9. Preview the "After Reading" and prepare for the writing by highlighting key evidence that will help support your response.
