Learning Objectives:
I can...

  • Determine what elements of a film's narrative align to the hero's journey
  • describe the hero's journey in my own terms

Opening:

1. Review the definition of an archetype.

2. In a hero's journey...what gets tested and what events and challenges must he/she overcome to become a "hero"?

3. Review the Three Stages and Ten Steps of the Hero's Journey...in your words and with your examples.

4. Reminder: Not all of the steps MUST be present in a text of her's journey.  In face, there can be multiple hero's journeys within one body of work.

Work Period:

5. Using clips from Batman Begins, find evidence of the Hero's Journey for Bruce Wayne.

Journal Quickwrite:
6. According to the final step in the Archetypal Hero's Journey, the Crossing, or Return Threshold, the hero must
  • "retain the wisdom gained on the quest"
  • "integrate that wisdom into his or her previous life"
  • "and perhaps decide how to share the wisdom with the rest of the world."

  • How does this final step help you to define the FUNCTION of an archetypal hero?

Closing:

6. If time allows, view a clip or two that demonstrate the Refusal of the Call.  Use SB page 30.
