Article of the Week:
1. I w ill check to see if your work is complete.
2. If so, I will move you to a group and you should discuss the questions members of the group have.
3. If not, sit for 10 minutes and quietly finish your work for the AoW.

Learning Objectives:
I can…

  • share writing in small groups to model "embedded quotations"
  • discuss annotations with post-its
  • question, interpret, respond and infer about a fictional text
Opening:
1. Show your paragraph to a partner (highlight the textual evidence)

2. Discuss evidence for tone.

Work Period:
3. Skim and scan back through Chapters 11-17.  Mark the text for moments in Jonas'

4. In your journal, write down questions, personal responses and interpretations you have about Chapters 11-17. (See page 77 for ideas on how to do this)

5. Create a circle with those who have read through the same amount of the novel.

6. With the text in hand...Discuss the questions you have about the text

Closing:

7. Over the holiday break - you have Extra Credit Independent Reading.  That can be entirely in The Giver, but you need to read THROUGH Chapter 20 by the time you return.

  • If you are behind, then catch up, because we'll be finishing the novel very shortly after you return from the break.
  • Reminder: We are focused on Steps in Jonas' Heroic Journey…so keep track of that as you read.
  • 14-21 "Notes on Reading" entries due when you return.  Use the notes on page 77 to guide your responses.
