Learning Objectives:
  • To relate physical challenge to the idea of heroism
  • To analyze poetry for theme
  • To brainstorm characteristics of heroes
HW Check: Page 10 and 11 "A Man" TPCASTT

Opening:
1. Discuss the following in small groups as a review of the poem, "A Man."

Theme:
  • How is this "man" considered a hero?
  • What is the challenge of his life now after the war?
Poetic Form:
  • Why is the poem in two stanzas?
  • What is the effect of having the last four lines as a new stanza?
Literal vs. Figurative
  • What do you think about the last two lines?  
    • Literal Wing?
    • Figurative Wing?

2. Large Group:
  • Discuss your analysis of the poem.
Tone:
  • What words describe the "man" before and after the SHIFT?
Theme:
  • What is the central message of this literary work?
  • What comment is the poet making about the man's challenge?

3. Class Notebook:
  • In a Circle Map, identify the Qualities of Heroism shown by the central figure in "A Man"
4.  Add the Literary Terms to your notebook, along with the definitions:
  • Stanza
  • Theme


Word Period:
4. SpringBoard page 12-13:
  • Based on the Title "Moco-Limping", what do you think the poem might be about?
  • Underline or highlight the following:
    • hobbles
    • savage grace
    • leader, brutal hunter, rickety little canine
    • club foot
    • stumbler
    • abnormal
    • my vain heart weeps
    • feeble
    • imperfection is forgotten

5. Continue the TP-CASTT in your small groups.
    • Write your responses on the poem and in the "My Notes" section on page 13.

    Closing/Homework:
    6. Respond to the writing prompt on page 12.
    7. Add heroic characteristics/traits gleaned from the poem "Moco Limping"
