Learning Objectives:

  • To define and categorize tone words
  • To analyze tone in a text
  • To relate physical challenge to the idea of heroism
  • To analyze poetry for theme
Opening:
1.  HW Check and Review page 8.  
  • Which words fit in which category?
  • Which words were left out?  List them on page 9.
    • What category do they all belong to?
2. In your Class Notebook, underline diction, denotation, and connotation and ensure that each is defined.
  • Add "diction" and its definition.
3. Identify the tone of the passage at the bottom of page 9.
  • Underline/highlight the phrases or words that suggest the tone.
  • Label the tone in the margin.
4. In your Class Notebook, write an Internal Monologue that clearly demonstrates the tone you were assigned yesterday (see yesterday's work).

Work Period:
5. "A Man" on page 10.  Predictions based on the Title?
  • Try reading aloud in TWO VOICES
Theme:
  • How is this "man" considered a hero?
  • What is the challenge of his life now after the war?
Poetic Form:
  • Why is the poem in two stanzas?
  • What is the effect of having the last four lines as a new stanza?
Literal vs. Figurative
  • What do you think about the last two lines?  
    • Literal Wing?
    • Figurative Wing?

TP-CASTT on page 11.

  • Work through the remainder of the questions on page 11 as you continue your analysis of the poem.
Tone:
  • What words describe the "man" before and after the SHIFT?
Theme:
  • What is the central message of this literary work?
  • What comment is the poet making about the man's challenge?

Closing:

6. Class Notebook:
  • In a Circle Map, identify the Qualities of Heroism shown by the central figure in "A Man"
7. SpringBoard page 12-13:
  • Based on the Title "Moco-Limping", what do you think the poem might be about?
  • Continue the TP-CASTT in your small groups or independently tonight.
