Learning Objectives:
- To examine challenge as the conceptual focus for the year
- To distinguish between denotation and connotation
- To identify personal challenges
- To examine the Embedded Assessment for key skills and knowledge required for success.
Supplies: SpringBoard, Class Notebook, Folder, Dictionary
If you haven't already, turn in your Reading Log.
Opening:
1. In your small group, share a few challenges you face (while I STAMP)
2. For one challenge, share the steps you plan on taking in order to face this challenge
3. Share your Folders in your small groups.
- Compile a list of synonyms and associations you have for the word CHALLENGE
- Add any words you didn't consider to your folder.
- Choose one group member to write three of the words on Card Stock and tape it on the Circle Map on the board.
4. Hand in folders
5. Using a dictionary and the top of page 6 for a review of terms, determine the following:
- Denotation of the word Challenge (noun and verb!)
- Connotation of the word Challenge
6. Using a word from our Challenge Word Wall, I will model how to complete the Graphic Organizer on page 6.
Work Period:
7. Choose another word from the word wall and complete your own G.O. in your Notebook.
- Label the HEADING of the Page, um, Challenges...
8. When you are done, work silently to UNPACK the Embedded Assessment on page 53-56.
- What skills and abilities must you have to do well?
- What knowledge must you demonstrate to be successful on this task?
Closing:
9. Create a Graphic Organizer to demonstrate 5-7 key skills and knowledge you must demonstrate for this Embedded Assessment
10. If time allows, share and create a group poster.
