Opening:
1. In small groups, review the characteristics of the epic hero, Odysseus.
  • Physical Characteristics
  • Mental Characteristics
  • Social Characteristics
  • Moral Characteristics
2. Ask yourselves:
  • What function does this hero serve?
  • Why does the ancient Greek culture, and cultures still, celebrate Odysseus as a hero?

3. On page 31, use the four Sticky Notes I give you and
  • Include a piece of key textual support that provides evidence of Odysseus' character.

Work Period:

4. Journal Quickwrite:
  • This is a narrative told in the 1st person POV.  Would Odysseus appear equally heroic if his tale were related from another character's point of view?  Explain
5. With a partner, or independently, make a choice and follow-through:

     Option A: Using the sequence of events you noted on page 31, create a Visual Storyboard of Six Key Events in this Hero's Road of Trials.  
  • On Side One, include textual support that highlights a key piece of action in the road of trials
  • On Side Two, sketch an illustration of each key event
     Option B: Using Odysseus' key character traits you've already identified, create a FOUR SQUARE illustrations of Odysseus' key traits in the four characteristics you've already identified.
  • On Side One, include textual support that highlights one characteristic
  • On Side Two: sketch an illustration that provides a visual representation of Odysseus' key characteristic in his Road of Trials
