Learning Focus:
I can...

  • explore the concept of heroism in real life and nonfiction text
  • practice incorporating and properly punctuating quotations in a text
  • create a well-developed paragraph in a Writing Group
Opening:
1. Determine who has completed the bottom section of the graphic organizer the best.  Who best does the following?
  • incorporates a quotation
  • incorporates a heroic trait
  • incorporates commentary explaining why or how Ana is a hero
2. Examine models from each group on the ELMO.

Work Period: Page 52 in handout.

3. In your group, collaborate to create a topic sentence that you all agree on for #1 on page 52.
Example:
What is the focus trait?
How is the trait demonstrated?

4. Once you are satisfied with your shared topic sentence, each member of the group should copy down 2-4 appropriate supporting quotations from the text.  For #2, Practice introducing quotations.  For example:

  • Despite her pain and exhaustion, Adam points out: "..."
  • Monica admits, "..."
  • Ana's husband George appreciates her ability to focus on the seemingly little things: "..."
5. Help one another incorporate quotations into a paragraph written in your journal.
Each member of the group must:
  • Share a topic sentence
  • Support one another as you work to incorporate textual evidence (not everyone knows how to do this, based on reading the paragraphs about Lincoln and Douglass!)
  • Provide feedback and revision suggestions for effectively incorporating quotations into text.
  • Finish the paragraph, on paper, by Thursday.  I will review them with each individual as you begin your journey on the EA then.
Closing:
6. In order to prepare for the EA on Thursday:
  • Free write on the concept of Heroism.  Consider: To what extent or to what degree can a person or an action be heroic?
  • Complete the graphic organizer on page 53 by consider possible subtopics for each definition strategy (#2 on page 53).
    • Function
    • Example
    • Negation
