Learning Goals:
I can…

  • compare and contrast a fictional society and a real society
  • use compare and contrast organizational structure in writing

Opening:

1. Discuss a few questions while I check page 71:
  • Why are order and success so important to the community?
  • What are some of the strengths and weaknesses of Jonas' community?

Work Period:

2. Using your notes, and the notes and thoughts of your group, complete page 72, providing details about each society - but judging them as either POSITIVE (pros) or NEGATIVE (cons)

3. Choose a topic and determine which society handles that part of the life cycle better.
  • Finding a Mate
  • Creating a Family
  • Mourning Deaths
4. Return to page 69 and take some notes in your JOURNAL.
  • Subject-by-Subject
  • Feature-by-Feature
  • Transitions Used in Compare and Contrast Expository Writing
5. Show a model of "Feature-by-Feature" and explore how it works.

6. Independently, think through your response to the writing prompt at the bottom of page 72.
  • Your writing will be due on Thursday, when you can show it to a your group and see if your organizational pattern was consistent.
  • Support your argument (take a position!) with textual evidence - using direct quotations and page references.
  • Use correct compare/contrast structure and transitions in your writing.

Closing:

7. Ask any questions you need to of me or your group.
  • Determine what you know the most about - where is your "expertise"?
  • Which feature is most interesting to you?
