Learning Objectives:

I can...

  • Examine a real-life hero in a nonprint text
  • Discover how a character meets and triumphs over challenges.
  • Create a thesis statement on the subject of facing challenges

Opening:

1. October Sky Quickwrite in your Journal:
  • Write a "working thesis" about Homer's challenges and his reactions to those challenges.
    • Use your notes from the film
    • Remember:
      • a thesis is a provable opinion on a topic.
      • It is clearly an opinion
      • It guides the reader toward a logical organizational structure
2. Share thesis in small groups

Work Period:

3. View the last three clips of the film, continuing to fill in the graphic organizer on page 15.

4. When the clips are finished, revise you thesis to reflect insights gained from the clips.
  • A rewritten version should follow your quickwrite.
  • Put a box around your final thesis
5. Share in small groups when you are finished.

Closing:

6. Add additional insights to your "heroism" circle map in your journal.

7. List the key qualities of a hero on the top of page 16 (#1)
